*How did Bee Smith Millinery begin?*

I have always wanted my own company. After finishing a Fashion degree, I had set up a stall at Spitalfields market in East London selling handbags, costume jewellery and hats. I had been working as an intern for various designers & stylists and wanted my own creative outlet. I was approached by a boutique who wanted to stock my hat designs, but I wasn’t confident enough in my skills so went back to college to study Millinery. I officially started my company in July 2010 with a contract with Rokit Vintage to design and make a range of vintage hats and it’s all gone from there.

*What makes Bee Smith Millinery unique?*

It is all handmade in our studio in South West London. My favourite side of my business is the bespoke designs, so clients come with their outfit/ wedding dress and a few ideas and we design their hat/ headpiece together. So the outcome is completely unique to them & their event.

*Could you please tell us about your bridal wear range?*

The bridal wear range consists of some classic pillbox shapes & birdcage veils. I am constantly adding & updating our bridal collection every time I feel inspired by one of our bespoke clients, which is often. I also source a lot of vintage lace and diamante to create beautiful unique pieces.

*How can brides really personalise and tailor your beautiful bridal accessories to suit their style/coordinate with their dress?*

Everything is bespoke, so we can match the colour of your dress, or the lace trim or flowers of your bouquet. I love creating the bridal pieces because it can be so personal. I have sewn initials into veils, or included ‘something blue’ into the linings of hats. My dream wedding dress is a short 1950s silhouette, so our bridal collection includes a lot of 50s inspired birdcage veils (Mainly so I can play dress up in the studio).

*At Sparkle Pearls and Lace, we love hats at weddings! What are your top tips for selecting a wedding hat?*

We create a lot of hats for wedding guests & Mothers of the bride & groom. All of the hats and headpieces can be made to match/ coordinate with their outfit. Especially with the Mothers of the bride/ groom, it’s important that they are comfortable with their hat and it suits the type of wedding, ie: Large brimmed hats for a traditional Church wedding or smaller floral headpiece for a garden outdoors wedding.

*Are wedding guests able to hire hats from you?*

Yes, we do offer a small selection of hats to hire. I am currently designing a Hat hire collection, which will be available to hire for a long weekend (3 days) in a range of colours/ styles.

*What can Bee Smith Millinery offer for a vintage loving bride/wedding guest?*

I love the 1940s/ 1950s hats so a lot of the designs are ‘vintage inspired’ and include a lot of pillboxes. I also use vintage lace, silk flowers and antique diamante brooches in my designs.

*Apart from weddings, at what other occasions could your hats be worn?*

I’ve made hats for so many different occasions from Christenings to Royal Investitures. It’s coming up to Ascot season and the Royal Garden Parties. I’m very lucky to be London based as there is a lot of hat wearing events.

*We love the idea of hat hen parties! Could you please tell us more about what you can offer brides and their hens?*

Hat making parties for Hen nights are a lot of fun! It’s a 2 hour workshop with a glass of prosecco, in which you and your hens make a headpiece. I provide all the materials and hat bases and you create the headpiece/ fascinators. There are lots of different styles for all levels of sewing skills. The parties can be held at your house or venue of your choice. Prices are £30 per person and the Bride goes free.

*Your 1920’s hat party sounds divine, what does this include?*

The 1920s hat party was inspired by my best friend’s Art Deco wedding. It is similar to the hat making party, with more 1920s styles. Think ostrich feathers and sequins headbands meets Great Gatsby.

*How is Bee Smith Millinery committed to ethical trading?*

As much as possible I try to source all fabric & materials from the Uk, with all the hats being handmade in my studio in South West London. I use a lot of vintage and lace. I also do not use fur in any of my designs.
